about
I grew up on a northern gulf island called Cortes. How do I describe Cortes?! It’s two ferries away from Vancouver Island - or three from Vancouver. It’s beautiful and raw and wild and I love it with all of my being. There are trees and generous people and winter storms and quiet beaches. But mostly trees. Although I’ve spent more time off the island now than I did on it as a kid, it’s still a big piece of my identity and it is very much still home.

This song is so dear to me because it’s about Cortes!!! I hitchhiked a lot in my early teenage years and from that I gained a lot of confidence and a strong sense of community - so now that I have a car, I pick up hitchhikers whenever I feel safe enough.
~
A few years ago, I picked up an eccentric young duck farmer on the way back from a Cortes visit. I drove her quite far out of my way, and only after being in the car with her for 45 minutes did I realize that she had two live ducks tucked under her arms. She had sweet names for them, but they were bound for the chopping block that evening.
~
Fast forward to me, studying music in a big-to-me city in the middle of the prairies. It’s winter and it’s so cold out and so far away from my island and this story comes tumbling out of me at a piano one afternoon. It’s about the young duck farmer, but it’s also about Cortes, and it’s also about all the growing up I did while standing with my thumb out on the side of the road.
